Key Futsal Positions & Roles

  • Goalie (G): The last line of defense, often required to be excellent with their feet to start attacks, as they act as an extra outfield player.
  • Sweeper (S): The defensive anchor who stays behind to break up opponent attacks, but also organizes play from the back and initiates offensive moves.
  • Right Winger (R): Covers the right flank, creates width and pace, and tracks back to defend.
  • Left Winger (L): Covers the left flank, creates width and pace, and tracks back to defend.
  • Forward (F): The highest attacking player, often playing with their back to goal to hold up the ball, combine with wingers, or turn and shoot.

Common Formations

  • 1-2-1 (Diamond): A balanced, popular formation featuring one fixo, two alas, and one pivo, offering a solid structure for both attack and defense.
  • 3-1: Focuses on a strong, deep defensive structure with one fixo and two wings/ala, relying on a single advanced pivot to score.
  • 2-2 (Square): A basic formation often used by beginners, offering two defenders and two attackers, which can easily transition into other systems.

Positions are fluid, with constant movement, rotation, and interchanging of roles expected to deceive defenders, particularly because there is no offside rule.
